Political Exiles
She approached me with bombed-out eyes
That I, an old-school Marxist steeped in theory, knew
Was a sure sign of impending revolutions
We escaped cross the border down Mexico way
To cure our defeated European souls in humid tropical isles
While we schemed a new world order under blistering suns
We grew indolent in papaya summers as one International after another
Bombarded us with character assassinations to belittle our sexual proclivities
We lost our passports escaping through an intense coconut grove dreaming of the sun
With forged papers we confused the border patrol and made it to the free world
Where we lectured with abandon and fucked like monkeys in stated-funded universities
Where we finally were able to shuck our shoes and go barefoot in the sand
They say ideology has no purpose now except to entertain the masses
Yet as we lie in bed and diddle our private parts while watching the evening news
We laugh at this conjecture scheming always as is our nature to take power and rule the world

For the life of me, I can’t remember
Though you were there vaguely maybe the color of your hair
Maybe in the last scene lost in the discarded dailies in the box
That tracks the one continuing wall the kitchenette the billowed scarf
The bottle of vodka & lemons the latchkey on the door
I can’t remember more maybe the ivory of your skin, the smell
Between your thighs maybe the sighs the picture of a tiger on the wall
A rectangular portion of a starless sky maybe the violet color of your eyes
We can pull back from the red kimono crumpled on the parquet floor
But for the life of me, but yes, your smile, close in on your lacquered toes
That the one black satin sheet left uncovered that I do recall the faded perfume
Behind your ear could be a start to overlay the credits
The piano keys in crescendo, frankly I do not remember
Bruised lips? But it must have been December because I brought you gifts
That I do remember, art books gift wrapped from the bargain table
The vodka lemony kiss at the door we sat on the parquet floor
And we talked and talked though of what I can’t for the life of me remember

Film Socialisme

No documents exist that he was separated at birth
No witnesses have come forth in support
Of any fact that rich or poor he still squints into the daybreak
No one calls him out as they did then from passing cars
And yet we believe him to be a happy man, esteemed friend and lover
Known for his laughter and serene visage known for his barefoot walks on beaches
As we pan blurry photos strewn on a disheveled hotel bed
And the camera zooms in and it’s him walking to school
So as they sit in a café the man says that they stole his heart that
Right from the start he knew he was the other as in another scene
Pine needles rain down from the sky in a sun-filtered strobe effect
Intercut of planes overhead and desolate streets at dusk in a blinding sequence
And in a flashback we see the kid walking through a patch of pine trees
As from afar he hears a name called out and a whoosh by his head
And then waving arms and the words many years later on the screen
As we cut to where somebody says we thought you were dead

Come in from the cold
It could be a spy movie chases down corridors in darkness
Those years that were like explosive devices words
Left undetonated in places we have no memory of waiting
For our gentlest misstep all that we’ve miscalculated
When we exchanged aliases to confuse the hunt when they lost the scent
We must see if we can save that embrace on a crowded street
It’s hard to keep track of all the wardrobe changes
Tell the script girl to make the necessary annotations
What were the slogans then? The issues? That we were prepared to die for
And all our encrypted messages in whose hands? In what dead drops
Are our words dissolving unread? As from an overhead shot we’re seen
Trying to flee undetected Under whose mercy are we still alive?

Buddy Movie
The only pure thought he’s ever had was of an island
As he runs away from madness in a bar because God
Is kind to him that night amid the fog the lighthouse’s revolving beam
As he inks his way through a poem or a message in a bottle
Who’s to say maybe the start of something grand and he reads it
On a hooker’s borrowed time to her let us then dissolve
To a place for dancing weeks later he learns the place burned down
Two bars in time he tells this to a friend who can’t remember
If they were ever young once as they stop the car and the camera follows as
They fall to the sidewalk in laughter sidesplitting them to tears
They fall through the years like a metaphor of leaves in the wind
A wrecking ball tears through an island bar a poem is burned alive

Rushes
Siempre podemos rodar otra cosa contratar otro reparto dime

They’d only just met for drinks and now they’re walking
They’d only just met and now they’re talking
They’re walking now they’re talking
The point of view is from a slow-passing car
She plays with her hair as he talks on & on but the subtitles
Are misleading they mouth their words
She begins to talk he lights a cigarette but the camera focuses on a pigeon
By the window she coughs he puts out a cigarette she dials a phone
Another phone rings in a corner of an empty apartment
We see pigeons scattering outside a window
Someone knocks on the door someone enters the bathroom
He lights her cigarette on an empty street she fixes his tie
It is afternoon in Paris its early evening in a Loíza Street bar
She alights from the car he circles something in the classifieds
The boat is roped to the pier she calls out from the kitchen
The subtitles say Stuttgarterplatz they meet for drinks after work

Espagueti western

Biopic
Corner bars passing cars it’s where he lives though
No longer thrives the hometown boy that lost a neighborhood
And with it his mind a full shot of the façade where his mother
Lost a garden and where they stole his Coca-Cola truck when he was five
But is he still alive? Can we do it with a supporting cast alone?
Through dialogue give the features of a man his countenance his style
But then, what’s the story Peter Lorre all that he received and all he’s lost
When he ratted out the maid for stealing coins when he humped a pillow in the dark
What are the audience metrics for such a thing? Let’s keep it light
Let us have him reading in a park let us throw in a trip to Europe
On a lark because where’s the drama in soaking postage stamps
In bathroom sinks or when he almost sets the house on fire

Seduction
Seduction shall always be la seducción that by which you are
The belated translation knowing the silly truths by which you are
The art the performance but not the words not that but all the
Conspiracy of acts you must repeat seduction is its own defeat repeated
A loop of acts reenacted what arm is touched and when what arm just
When to kiss hold back a kiss its own reward or just maybe you’re the one
Who’s played the camera can catch her going up the inevitable stairs a pause
Then a shot above her shoulder where you wait expectantly the rush the pause
Then cut to the endless possibilities where you can luxuriate pleasure is
For pleasure’s sake a wait a redoing a repositioning longing prolonged Is it wrong?
This dilation this reconfiguration these dalliances this song of myself these
Reckonings as I look out at glass-framed suburbia for the sake of a moment

Quiet Trains
It is our metaphorical heart that pulls us apart asunder
The lady in the bar seen from afar thru the smoke that lingers
It is the words that must always say goodbye that cold breeze
From nowhere that displaces a strand of your hair that billows gently
In the air then falls brusquely on your cheek thru my fingers it is
The hand that never knows what the other is doing that sets the
Heart racing until time dishevels our faces that collapse just
Just short of the longing that all fires must burn to

Days of youth
Living carelessly foot pressed on the accelerator
Days of youth kisses in a telephone booth the trompe-l'œil
That’s love as seen from above the languor of their embrace
A lost afternoon just shadows the crags and cliffs of an old man’s face
They kiss in anger as day breaks on their breath parting is a slow death
Such sweet sorrow they agree to meet again tomorrow
Before it’s too late and in a split screen they go about their lives
Make shopping lists catch up on family gossip rinse the leaves out of their hair
Or sit reading a book naked on a chair so as to prolong their desire
The camera spies them sitting alone in cafes high contrast in sangfroid blue
Redacting their interior monologues their parting words on damp napkins
Under the inquisitive eye of the waiter who comes to his own conclusions

A face on the bus
He has no words for her because the words have long expired
Has no words for that face tilted to one side a face that´s satisfied
Looking it seems forever at her notebook pen gripped in a most
Unpenmanship fashion as if she were scraping clay
A face on the bus on no particular day leaned over enclosed
Within her youth her unintended beauty and more than he could bear
Let the camera linger on her unruly hair her perfect skin in his eyes
The lens captures a passion for her lips that meander their tight Abyssinian
Of all the interminable bus rides to nowhere he’s taken the short or
Endless days the sameness that is not unlike death that stretches vast
The camera finds him looking at her imagining that she scribbles a poem
Only to see that she’s adding or subtracting maybe what she’s owed
A cut to his eyes betrays all the madness all the sorrow as he
Sees himself lost in her face just bowed so to the backlight A shimmering blast
That jolts him full force into the presence of the flitting divine

Old man’s tale
It opens on an old man’s wretched walks as we hear the talk that
Goes on in his head then we see a long paragraph of loss across the screen
To interpolate for fears that years have bred the sexless dreams
Then we hear a scream off-stage a darkened stage one spotlight
And a microphone enticing him to croon a lover’s tune to make
A thousand ladies swoon he sits and waits to catch his breath a reverie
Dissolves into his memories clipped scenes of misspent youth
How he almost slipped into the sea one afternoon at three how he
Mouthed a man’s erection in a two-door Malibu parked in a park
We see him naked shuffling down a hall looking for the time on a wall
Turning on the faucet in the dark to help him pee dragging on a
Cigarette to help him think what brought him to the brink
Or what went wrong and when was the last time that he touched
A woman’s breast or traipsed into a bar in the late afternoons or
Seen the moon encircled by the clouds or ran through the crowds
Laughing out loud with all his teeth in display in the summer of his days

Last Year in Marienbad
When they take all the words out of your mouth
You shall stand alone in an open field and then
Part of you will read this and part of you will go insane
You will not be able to rewrite the scene and the plot will thicken
Around your tired eyes and you will take one long last walk
Through the city in the torrid afternoon of summer and
There will be no dictionaries for the words coming out of the mouths
Of strangers wafting in the breeze of early evening and you’ll know
You dreamed this once how they danced around you how somehow
You knew their faces how their scents reminded you of something
